She Was America's Sweetheart ...

She also set off the hairstyle that swept America

We are talking about, of course, the 1976 Olympic Gold Champion Ice Skater, Dorothy Hamill.

She, and her bobbed haircut, took the Olympics by storm, and, seemingly, every girl and woman, wanted to be Dorothy Hamill, to have that haircut.

And her popularity, as gigantic as it was, happened in the pre-internet, pre-on-line tabloid days.

If you missed out, back in the mid-1970's, or, would like to relive those days with your daughter, 13909 Antiques can help.

We have a pair of Dorothy Hamill Dolls

Dressed in her Olympic skating outfit, complete with gold medal around her neck, our dolls are without the original boxes.

Come by and get these gems first ... There's a Hairstyle salon next to 13909 Antiques, perhaps, you can pop in for a new hairdo as well (wink, wink) ...

The Eagle Flys Today!

Another exquiste piece here at 13909 Antiques

Multi-Colored Wooden Eagle

This is a tremendous piece of work, using mutiple-colored wood, a soaring Eagle cluthcing the earth in her claws.

It's a whopping 27" wingspan, and 24" from highest point, to bottom of globe.

This would make an awesome display, at the foyer of your office, in your office, at work, or at home ... Or perhaps, just a lover or Orinthology

Don't miss out on this phenominal piece of work

And, without futher ado, take it away, Mr. Parker ....

Paging Hildy Johnson and Walter Burns!

*** SOLD ***

13909 Antiques, certainly, has a piece that could have been used in the classic movie 'His Girl Friday' ...

Antique Royal Typewriter

This piece is in working condition (it could use a new ribbon, and a professional cleaning wouldn't hurt it) and, customers coming into the shop have been gravitating to it, oggling it (and, it may be featured in an upcoming musical production - 13909 Antiques allowed a composer to record it's sounds for an organic composition he is writing, using ambient sounds)

It's from somewhere between 1908 and 1915, based on other Royal Typewriters of that era - ours has glass panels on the sides

Typewriters are making a comeback.

A few years ago, NPR featured a story, in which they interviewed the person here in Arlington, who has a Typewriter store, and another in New Orleans. It was said that young people are turning to old (and new) typewriters as an "Anti-iPod Statement"

A recent customer relayed to me, a recent high-school graduate, for her graduation gift, wanted (and received) a portable typewriter.

It's here, and it's available ...

Rock-A-Bye Baby, Part Deux - Antique Field Cradle ... (Circa 1876-86)

***SOLD***

"Holy Cats-In-The-Cradle", Batman ...

This is an incredible, unbelievable piece, just into 13909 Antiques today

Antique Field Cradle (Circa 1876-86)

It is made of Mahogany, with curved slates, hung between the frames, that go from handles to runners, so that it can swing, and two metal wheels, allowing you to walk your baby ...

This was patented in 1876.

"Designed as a convenience for agricultural workers to enable them to carry their infants around in the fields with them as they worked ..."
While it has some scratches, one runner repaired and some signs of wear, it is in remarkable good condition, for something 128-to-138-years-old,

It is not fragile, per se, but is slight and it meant for carrying a small baby, so I wouldn't advise trying to use it to carry groceries or such

This is a somewhat rare object (for this area, at least) and only serious inquires will be accepted

Email me for info on coming to my shop to see and purchase.

I don't expect this to last too long

Shave and A Haircut ... Two Bits ...

Now into 13909 Antiques are two fabulous pieces of Antique Barber equipment.

1. Kriss Kross Blade Sharper

You have to see this ... Still in Original Box, you secure the blade and start turning the crank ... After a number of second, the blade-holder arm lifts up and flips the blade, so as to give an even sharpening ... This is from the Early Century, perhaps around 1920, or so

2.  Antique Shelton Gentry Vibrator

This piece is in great shape, but the cotrd is very frayed, and will have to be rewired if intended to use ... Will, at first glance, it looks like a mini Hair Dryer, back in-the-day, the barber would use this to massage the clients neck area

If you are a barber (or know one) these would be great items to have in your shop, as fuctional pieces, or good props for your window or counter

Anyone else into collecting Antique Barber equipment, they're here ,,.

"Ah, Mr. Draper ... About Your Expense Acount ...."

This could have come off an early Mad Men set.

Vintage 1950s Remington Electric Adding Machine

This is one of the early models of Electric Adding Machines.

I haven't found another of this exact model (there was one I saw that was a "Remington-Rand" machine) ...

Give your work, or home, office a nice Retro look

I have some additional items, including an Early Century Royal Typewriter, and a Early 1930's Decca Hand-Crank Phonograph, as well as a bevy of Old Magazines, Antiques and Collectibles

Meet One of Our Staff

We're peeling back the curtian, for a peek at one of our staff members;

Beany!

He's 13909 Antiques Chief of Staff, Security Guard, and Good Luck Charm.

Beany comes from the late 1940's puppet show, and late 1950's television cartoon, 'Beany and Cecil'

Cecil was a sea serpent, who, week-after-week, would bail Beany out of whatever trouble he got himself into.

And it was this, as well;
..."The crux of Beany's success was the intermingling of current political issues and fiascos that appeared as thinly veiled plots easily recognizable as lampoons of current political issues or personalities. The Shakespearian asides given by Beany, Cecil and the rest of the cast often alluded to embarrassing public fiascos or personages, on which the adult audience immediately picked up..."

Our Beany, with a smile on his, face, stands as sentry over the store.

Stop by, give a "Shout Out" to Beany ...

Rock-A-Bye Baby ...

And it will have to be a mightly big treetop ...

One of the new pieces of inventory into 13909 Antiques is a tremendous Early Century, Handcrafted Cradle

This comes from around the 1920's, of solid Golden Oak, and it very, very good condition.

This would look great on someone's summer porch, gently rocking your infant to sleep ...

Stop by our shop, it looks much better, much more striking, in person.

A Musical Interlude - Abdullah Ibrahim

Beginning today, we will, from time-to-time, be sponsoring the 13909 Antiques Blog with a "Musical Interlude", perhaps some nice background tune to have on while you go through our posts

Today,, we feature the legendary, and tremendous, South African pianist, Abdullah Ibrahim (also know as "Dollar Brand"), and his wonderful tune, "Water From An Ancient Well"

Enjoy!

Vintage Nichols and Stone Rocking Chair

 13909 Antiques was most fortunate, recently, to acquire a killer piece of furniture;

A Vintage Nichols and Stone Rocking Chair

This is a tallback model, in excellent condition, and, in the neighborhood of 50-to-60-years-old, or so, according to it's former owner.

And, it is most comfortable to sit in, rock a little, and ponder the universe (well, you'll be free to ponder what you wish, you're not held to the universe ... Whatever you ponder, you'll do so in comfort, sitting in the Vintage Nichols and Stone)

Come by and check it out, I don't expect to last long here

13909 Antiques Is Flying High!

Well, not literally, but figuratively ...

I - finally - got our sign up!

Just in time for our 2nd Week Anniversary ....

Due to conflicts, in schedules (either mine or my sign guy), and, more so, the weather, we were long-delayed in getting this done.

You may not find it fancy - we employed the prudent "KISS" policy (for those not familar with the "KISS policy, it's "Keep It Simple Stupid").

For me, it's a beautiful. priceless piece of work

Come by, see it for yourself, and stop in, do some browsing ... I have been adding inventory all week, and will be putting up more posts, today, and through the coming week.

(BTW - Our "Sign Guy" is the artist ZACH)
