Antique Syrian Narghile

Well, we have another awesome item here at 13909 Antiques!

Antique Syrian Narghile

And this one is close to us - it belonged to our grandparents, who imigrated from Damascus, Syria, back in 1902, and 1905, respectively.

In this country, people are more familiar with them, referred to as "Hookah".

It has a striped glass bottom, with silver-plated top, with engraved tweezers for placing your choice of smoking material.

We did have to discard the tube, that went from the Narghile, to the wood smoking tips, as it had corroded to the point it was crumbling to the touch, but getting a replacement shouldn't be too difficult.

Pointer Post - The Repair of an Antique Oriental Rug

Regular readers of our 13909 Antiques Blog will know that we have, a few times in the past (Here - Here - Here) higlighted our good friend, Mr. Shahin Kia, and his Artistic Oriental Rug Shop, in Belmont.

Mr. Kia is too modest to admit that he is a Master, when it comes to the knowledge of Oriental Rugs, certainly one of the best in this country, and, perhaps, beyond.

This is evidenced by the Collectors who, when looking for a certain Oriental Rug, or for the repair of one, turn to Mr. Kia.

Recently, an Antique Chinese Oriental Rug was brought to Mr. Kia's Artistic Orientals shop. It had been poorly repaired in the past, and this person wanted it corrected, done right.

In his post Oriental Rug Repair, Mr. Kia explains this, and shows the "Before" and "After" photos of the rug, and it is astounding - you would never believe that a repair was made, that the Antique Chinese Oriental Rug wasn't still in it's original state.

Vintage 1957 Parker Brothers Bingo Game with Automatic Selector

This comes from 1957, and has all that you need for a night of game-playing fun.

All the Playing Cards, and Markers are there, and, the controling numbers, the cellephane hasn't been broken yet, so, either this game wasn't used, or they improvised on keeping track of the numbers drawn.

And, it has the heralded "Automatic Selector", quite the item for the day, to draw out the numbers.

The box has a bit of wear on one corner, but it is, overall, in great condition.

With another 4-6-weeks of Winter left, have a bunch of friends over, and have a Bingo Game Party!

Vintage French Bronze Vanity Circular Art Deco Jewelry Box

While we call this "Vintage", speculating it comes from the 1930s, it may be considerably older.

It is bronze, with a Art Deco/Art Nouveau look, no discernable marker markings, standing 5" Tall, 3 1/2" Wide (interior) and 4" Wide at the base.

There is rust inside, and on the bottom of the exterior base, however, sitting on your vanity, it has a stunning appearance, giving you a tremendous Retro look.

Obviously, it could be used for a variety of things, not just jewlery.

13909 Antiques and the Snow This Weekend

Well, we seem to be in line for a bit of Winter Weather this weekend.

This historic storm, that is going to bury the Mid-Atlantic states, is being forecast to just give us here, in the Boston area, a "glancing blow", though, in less than 24-hours, we've gone from virtually nothing, maybe a dusting, to upwards of 3-inches.

Despite the great technology weatherman have in forecasting, it's still comes down to a crapshoot as to what will actually happen, as David Epstein, on his 'Growing Wisdom' blog notes;

"I know it can be frustrating still having us “experts” tell you there might be shifts in a storm, but that’s the reality of the limitation of forecasting, even 30 hours before a storm begins. Every professional in this business hates making even small changes to the accumulation maps, believe me ..."

So, 13909 Antiques is going to "play it by ear" as to how long we will be open on Saturday, and if we open at all on Sunday, all depending on how much snow we actually get.

I suggest you email us if you are intending to come by, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning, to check if we are open.

1930s Vintage Weekly Picture Jigsaw Puzzle Series A-4 "Lion in Sunset"

1930s Vintage Weekly Picture Puzzle  Series A-4 "Lion in Sunset"

This comes from the 1930s, likely the Depression Era, from the Viking Manufacturing Company, of Boston, Massachusetts.

For a period of time, Viking was a kingpen of Jigsaw Puzzles, selling hundreds-of-thousands of them.

From 'The Jig Is Up';

Anne Williams tells us in Jigsaw Puzzles: An Illustrated History and Price Guide that a map maker in England cut up a map and sold it as a game in the late eighteenth century, thus producing the first jigsaw puzzle. Chris McCann wrote the history of the Great Jigsaw Puzzle Panic of 1932-1933 which traces the popularity of this hobby in the Northeast United States. In September of 1932 Viking Manufacturing Company of Boston produced 12,000 puzzles which sold out instantly. In December they sold 200,000. In January one half million puzzles sold at newsstands for twenty five cents each. Puzzle factories sprang up to compete, adding extra shifts to meet the new demand. Six million puzzles were sold at peak. This craze quieted in March of 1933 when FDR closed the banks for two weeks and people were forced to buy only vital necessities. Today there are an estimated ten million puzzles sold each year.

We are forced to sell this "As-Is", being we haven't had the time to piece it together, and will assume all the pieces are there.

It's the Original Box, which has some wear, and tears, but is still sound.

Being it's still Winter, and snow storms still to come, this is just in time, in the event you are housebound, you can pass the hours, waiting for the cold and snow to stop, putting together this puzzle.

These come from the 1980s, German-made, offered at the time by Franklin Mint.

And they are quite awesome.

All are rather menacing, and perched on Lead Crystal Bases, all measuring 10" Tall, with the bases varying between 10" and 16" Long

This would be a great start in creating your own Animal Menagerie, or a good gift to someone that collects Animal Figurines
