Antique 1877 Gates Folding Drafting Table

Another fantastic, utterly awesome item is here at 13909 Antiques!

Antique 1877 Gates Folding Drafting Table

This was patented on June 19, 1877, by George W. Gates, of Worcester, Massachusetts, made of cherry wood, and is in tremendously good condition, for its' age - all elements to it still functioning.

While it originally came with two draws, only one survived, and we are most fortunate that it is the draw that has an advertising informational sheet pasted into it, billing it as "The Best Work, Study, Card or Office Table Ever Manufactured"

It goes on to extol that "it is entitled to a place; and for Social Games, Cutting, Drawing or as a Reading Desk, etc., is has no equal ..."

And, as it turns out, this piece is of historical note.

While there is a tear in the pasted sheet, obscuring one of the company names, it is the work of George W. Gates, and there is a story about Gates, and this table in the Spring 1993 Smithsonian Preservation Quarterly;
"The 1870s was an expansive period of manufacturing for the industrial arts. The proliferation of numerous patented furniture designs reflected the abundance of American invention and achievement during this period"
Citing Gates' folding drafting table, the piece went on to say;
[snip]
"The Gate's Table is highly expressive, betraying the fact that strictly utilitarianism was not Gates' only design concern. This table was produced at a moment when the patented furniture of the nineteenth century reflected important nineteenth century American taste: exuburence, love of machinery, and a desire for self-sufficiency. The Neo-Grec style of this "Castle" Collection Table is an eclectic variation of the late neo-classicism that is highly energetic in form, The table's pedestal with its winged lion's paw feet is an imaginative and dynamic synthesis of historical motifs. The mechanical complexity of the folding table reveals Gate's infatuations with machinery and a reconciliation between function and beauty."

The sheet also offers the recommended heights, under "A Model of Usefulness and Beauty that cannot fail to prove a favorite, wherever seen and used."

Its' flat surface measures 32" wide x 24" tall.

Quite simply, this is an awesome and fantastic piece of Antique Furniture.

Whether you work as an artist, or draftsperson, need a study, card, or puzzle table, or, perhaps, are  a collector of Antique Furniture, you'll want to wing your way here to 13909 Antiques, and secure purchasing this Antique 1877 Gates Folding Drafting Table before someone else does

This Is Why You Should Buy Antique Furniture!

It's been a grumble among Antique Dealers that the younger generation today doesn't like, doesn't appreciate Antique Furniture, for various reasons beyond price - they have small apartments, they move around frequently, they want to change their decor every few years ...

The reasons go on-and-on ...

Here at 13909 Antiques, we've been fortunate that a score, or two, of young people have indicated they prefer Antique Furniture over Ikea Furniture, or other modern furniture found in the big box stores.

Along with the craftsmanship, the beauty, Antique Furniture isn't going to fall apart in a year, or two, or, the first time you move (we know of at least one Moving Company that will not insure Ikea Furniture when moving it).

Well, sadly, here's another reason;

IKEA Offers Free Wall Anchoring Repair Kit for Chests and Dressers Due to Tip-over Hazard After Two Children Died
"WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with IKEA North America, of Conshohocken, Pa, is announcing a repair program that includes a free wall anchoring kit, for their MALM 3- and 4-drawer chests and two styles of MALM 6- drawer chests, and other chests and dressers.  The chests and dressers can pose a tip-over hazard if not securely anchored to the wall.
IKEA received reports of two children who died after MALM chests tipped over and fell on them.  Consumers should immediately stop using all IKEA children’s chests and dressers taller than 23 ½ inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29 ½ inches, unless they are securely anchored to the wall.  The free wall anchoring kit should be used to secure MALM and other IKEA chests and dressers to the wall ..."
Very sad, tragic news indeed.

But to this point, unless your child happened to be born on the planet Krypton, he or she isn't going to pull down an Early Century Oak Hutch, or a 1930's Mahogany Dresser.

In fact, it's very likely, with such a piece, your children's grandchildren will be able to pass down that  Early Century Oak Hutch, or a 1930's Mahogany Dresser, to their grandchilden, thanks to the craftsmanship, that it is solidly built.

So, next time you need such a piece of furniture, skip the box stores and malls, and visit 13909 Antiques, or, depending where you are reading this from, your local Antique Dealer.

New 13909 Antiques Video!

Out with the Old, and In with the New.

We've been busy here at 13909 Antiques this past week, breaking out some new inventory, cleaning up, reorganizing inventory, all to get ready for the new year approaching.

There's still a few days left of shopping, to help out the good cause of The Gifts of Hope, where 13909 Antiques is donating 15% of our sales to benefit the Belmont Food Pantry, so come on in and pick out some gifts for your family and/or friends with January birthdays!

When we opened this past March, we shot a video shortly after our debut, which netted us a few sales, from as far away as Texas, and Canada.

So, since we have significantly more inventory from when we first opened our doors, we shot a new video today.

Pop the popcorn and kick back in your easy chair and take a look

And be sure to come by 13909 Antiques in the upcoming days, and weeks, and get lost in yesteyear, in the bevy of Antiques and Vintage Items we currently have, you'll be surprised by what you may find

Closing Again For A Few Days

13909 Antiques will be closed for three-days this week - Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week (October 1, 2 and 3; and maybe longer), as yours truly is undergoing minor knee surgery on Wednesday and will need a few days to recover.

 Actually partial recovery comes in 2-weeks and full recovery takes 4-6-weeks, but, if all goes well, I should be moving around okay on 1-2-days, and, I can chill out in the store, just as well as chilling out at home.

At least, that way, even though my help may be limited (no heavy lifting, no stairs), you can still shop, peruse the vast amount of Antiques, Collectibles and Vintage Items housed in 13909 Antiques.

So, apologies, again, for closing for a short time but do plan to come visit 13909 Antiques soon, you'll have a blast doing so

Rock-A-Bye Baby, Part Deux - Antique Field Cradle ... (Circa 1876-86)

***SOLD***

"Holy Cats-In-The-Cradle", Batman ...

This is an incredible, unbelievable piece, just into 13909 Antiques today

Antique Field Cradle (Circa 1876-86)

It is made of Mahogany, with curved slates, hung between the frames, that go from handles to runners, so that it can swing, and two metal wheels, allowing you to walk your baby ...

This was patented in 1876.

"Designed as a convenience for agricultural workers to enable them to carry their infants around in the fields with them as they worked ..."
While it has some scratches, one runner repaired and some signs of wear, it is in remarkable good condition, for something 128-to-138-years-old,

It is not fragile, per se, but is slight and it meant for carrying a small baby, so I wouldn't advise trying to use it to carry groceries or such

This is a somewhat rare object (for this area, at least) and only serious inquires will be accepted

Email me for info on coming to my shop to see and purchase.

I don't expect this to last too long

Rock-A-Bye Baby ...

And it will have to be a mightly big treetop ...

One of the new pieces of inventory into 13909 Antiques is a tremendous Early Century, Handcrafted Cradle

This comes from around the 1920's, of solid Golden Oak, and it very, very good condition.

This would look great on someone's summer porch, gently rocking your infant to sleep ...

Stop by our shop, it looks much better, much more striking, in person.

Vintage Nichols and Stone Rocking Chair

 13909 Antiques was most fortunate, recently, to acquire a killer piece of furniture;

A Vintage Nichols and Stone Rocking Chair

This is a tallback model, in excellent condition, and, in the neighborhood of 50-to-60-years-old, or so, according to it's former owner.

And, it is most comfortable to sit in, rock a little, and ponder the universe (well, you'll be free to ponder what you wish, you're not held to the universe ... Whatever you ponder, you'll do so in comfort, sitting in the Vintage Nichols and Stone)

Come by and check it out, I don't expect to last long here

13909 Antiques Is Flying High!

Well, not literally, but figuratively ...

I - finally - got our sign up!

Just in time for our 2nd Week Anniversary ....

Due to conflicts, in schedules (either mine or my sign guy), and, more so, the weather, we were long-delayed in getting this done.

You may not find it fancy - we employed the prudent "KISS" policy (for those not familar with the "KISS policy, it's "Keep It Simple Stupid").

For me, it's a beautiful. priceless piece of work

Come by, see it for yourself, and stop in, do some browsing ... I have been adding inventory all week, and will be putting up more posts, today, and through the coming week.

(BTW - Our "Sign Guy" is the artist ZACH)
